East Side Summer Apple Program -2007 - Save Our History

This program was initially launched as a partnership with Save Our History and the APD Eastside Story after-school enrichment program and has continued on into the six-week summer camp program. Students learn about local history, attend historical field trips, and also participate in building a webpage to showcase what they have learned. Partners providing access to computer labs include Austin Free Net and The Digital Workforce Academy. The objective of the Save Our History Project is to teach youth groups ages 9-13 about:
  • securing and preserving materials and artifacts pertaining to African American culture in Austin and Travis County, Texas;
  • locating historic sites for historical marker designation in the area of Austin and Travis County;
  • promoting significant ethnic observances which reflect the heritage of the African American;
  • and recognizing efforts of individuals and organizations who protect, enhance and reflect respect for Austin's African American heritage.
Check out what we did this summer
